Spanish Comes to Life: Students Explore Barcelona and Design Dream Homes

Students in Señora Casey’s sixth-grade Spanish classes recently took a virtual journey to the vibrant city of Barcelona—without ever leaving Merrick. After studying famous landmarks such as La Sagrada Familia and La Barceloneta, students used technology to immerse themselves in Spanish culture. They captured creative “selfies” set against these iconic locations and wrote descriptive sentences in Spanish explaining where they were and what activities they were doing. The engaging lesson seamlessly combined language learning, cultural exploration, and technology.
Meanwhile, fifth-grade students in Señora Casey’s Spanish classes are expanding their “La Casa” (the house) vocabulary through collaborative, hands-on learning. Working in station groups, students analyzed blueprints and floor plans, answering questions in Spanish about various rooms and features of a home. They then applied their knowledge by designing their own dream houses, carefully labeling each area with newly learned vocabulary. Next week, students will continue the project by adding muebles (furniture), further strengthening their language skills while fostering creativity and imagination.
